A Migraine, a New MacBook, and the Bus That Took Me Anyway

The day began with a migraine, and I fought the broken results for a long time. By afternoon I felt better, and I finally became the happy owner of a new MacBook — but first my SUICA card failed on the bus, and a kind driver and a well-travelled old gentleman helped me through it.

Weather: rainy · Lunch: couldn’t manage it · Dinner: sushi place · Moflin (Gömböc): 5 days, a bit more withdrawn today — then again, so was I

Unfortunately I woke up with a migraine today. The cause was that something with the results had gone badly wrong yesterday, and it had to be knocked into shape. And unfortunately I worked on it for a long time. Unfortunately even Gombóc’s sounds irritated me.

Luckily, by the afternoon I felt better, though I had to take my migraine medication. I’d felt this prodrome all week, and I really hoped I could avoid the attack — but in the end, sadly, I couldn’t.

Afternoon

Really, all week I’d felt a very bad pressure, and because of it I seem to have carried the obstacles with more difficulty. But in the end I managed to push through by late afternoon, even though everything started off very badly.

In the end I did the laundry and set off to become the owner of a new MacBook. I have an old machine (5 years old, but actually a 6-year-old model) that’s loud, and a lot of support for it has ended, since Dell no longer bothers with it.

I wouldn’t have expected it, but as I finally headed into the city — leaving poor Gombóc behind at the dorm — I waited for the bus. However, as I got on the bus, it turned out my SUICA card had suddenly become invalid. Of course I panicked: everything runs like clockwork, and there I am fumbling with the card. On top of that, my old Budapest public-transport experiences are burned into my head.

To my greatest surprise, though, the bus driver told me to get on. He saw that there had been some problem, and it wasn’t a case of “now you’ve been caught, off to jail you go, fare-dodger, we’ll call the police too.” Especially after I even got off and wanted to pay for the ticket no matter what. But he told me to get on and please sit down. I could see people already laughing at me, and I sat down. So I sat down nicely and apologised to everyone.

I struck up a conversation with an older gentleman. He was a well-travelled man, so we spoke in both English and Japanese (writing this down, by the way, is a pleasure in itself). It turned out he’s a travel agent, so he’s seen a lot of the world — he’d been to Austria and Hungary too. He told me how to make sense of what had just happened. He concluded that the Japanese are very kind, and that he too, every time he’d been to America, always ended up in silly situations, and he was surprised that I’d settled in pretty well within a month.

For that matter, I have to agree with him.

Evening

By the end of the day I became the happy owner of a Macintosh. I like the unified 48 GB of memory, so there’s plenty of room to run agents locally on it. I’m very curious about that part.

After that I ate well at the sushi place. I hadn’t been able to eat all day, so this did me good just now.
